today i did a little reverse engineering for the guys out there. so i disassembled my lenovo miix 2 8 because i want to know what ssd or in this case emmc is integrated in this device. i disassembled the motherboard because at the first view i was not able to localize where the emmc is located. after taking apart the mainboard cover i realized that it is soldered on the mainboard. so there is only a hard way to upgrade this to a bigger one. my miix was sold as 64gb version. while i checked all the parts i saw next to the micro sd slot the empty space for the lte or umts slot. check out the pics. i am sorry they are not i the correct order here but if anyone out there is interested in details please contact me.
Hello,
First of all, good job with disassembling.
I have Miix 2 8 64GB 3g since 5th December 2013. I broke digitizer in May, and since then I am trying to avoid that expensive repair in official service, which only, holds spare parts(Czech Republic). Do you have any clue, what „LCD module“ should I look for, there is plenty of them in maintenance manual, I practically need to decide between those 2:
ZIJH0 LCD Module OGS 3G
ZIJH0 LCD Module 3G
Do you have any clue which is the correct one ?
Thanks in advance
David
Hi David,
OGS means One Glas Solution. Its the lightest technology nowadays to produce display panels and has some advantages over non ogs panels. maybe you can proof which one is used in your device by disassembling. While i took mine apart i remember that there were lots of stickers on the modules. on these stickers there should be the sparepart number.
i only can explain these lots of display panels in the service manual that lenovo was testing different panels in the miix. but i am sure about 98% that there are ogs panels inside the miix.
here is a link about the technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Glass_Solution

Hello Daniel,
Thanks for fast response, today I asked for price of ZIJH0 LCD Module OGS 3G they are literally offered it to me for more than half price of tablet, so I am giving up unless there will be some cheaper opportunity to get the part. I am done with Lenovo since my Miix is EU distribution and I cannot use wifi channel 12,13 due to global USA settings(they have only 11 wi-fi channels allowed by regulatory domain) no solution so far. Poor support, poor build quality. I dont know why Dell venue 8 pro is not distributed in my country.
regards
David
Dear Daniel,
Could you tell me how to open the back cover? do I need to apply force or some trick to make it open?
Thanks
Mike
Hi Mike,
take a plastic card like an old credit card then start on the long side next to the upper edges. Put the card between the cover and the frame and give the card little torsion. be sure that you took out the sd card before.
then go around the device. if all clips from the backcover are loose. you are able to slide off the cover upwards (away from the metal part at the lower frame).
the cover and the clips are so far really solid so no worry to damage it so far.
Have a nice day,
Daniel
Hi Dan,
Are there any internal USB pins available on the Miix 2 8″?
Thanks
Hi John,
What you mean exactly? For connecting an usb device to the mainboard? I am sure there are. There are some miix versions around which have the 3g modem integrated. So far i remember there are connectors pins on the lower side of the mainboard. I think in the 3g versions the modem is connected there. I will check the raw pics tomorrow to find out more.
Daniel
I’m also interested in finding out if there’s a possible internal USB port you can use.
Hi!
Thank you very much for this post. I’ve been searching for this dissemble for a very long time! Brief images, too!
I have a miix 8 wifi only. The emmc seems to be corrupted. My files slowly missing, and after formatting it, it starts to freeze every time. TT
I would like to know your opinion in changing the internal storage myself. I have quite good skill in soldering and stuff.
Hope to hear from you, soon. Thanks again!
Hi Dean,
So far as i remember the Samsung Emmc is SMD soldered to the mainboard. You can find it under the metal heatsink next to the cpu. I did not solder such a microchip before. But it should be possible with special tools like a hot-air solder unit. There is a service manual around this lenovo topic. There you can order a spare mainboard by number from lenovo…
Daniel
Thanks for the quick response! I think I’ll try the spare mainboard first.
Regards.
may i ask how you found this blog?
its interesting to me´how the people come here.
Thanks
Daniel
hi i need a speaker do you help me please? sorry for my bad english
No I am sorry. I eont have spareparts here. If you are still in warranty send it back to lenovo service. There are much people around who have crashed speakers. This is a driver problem as far as i know and lenovo will exchange the speakers for free and will do an additional driver update to prevent blowing the speakers. In may there was an official softare update which will do the same to prevent killing the speakers for both Lenovo Miix 2-8 and Thinkpad 8.
hi
how are you?
i came across your web page (googled miix 2 8 disassembly)
as i am wondering how easy is the micro usb port to re solder/replace?
thanks
I think it is possible to replace it with medium soldering skills and a calm hand.
hi thank you, might buy from jaycar a small tip soldering iron got few normal tip ones, i have seen battery ones small tip might work best with it not to hot for board.
have to charge unit with plug in certain position also slow charge cause no data pins, cant use OTG.
