Miix and wireless charging

While testing around to find a 5VDC source inside the Lenovo Miix i stumbled above wireless charging. So i will order a Qi-Universal receiver for charging available at amazon LINK. I am sure it will fit in the back of the Miix. The only thing which makes me thoughtful is the aluminium backcase. I hope that it will work even there is only a 500mA source then. For overnight charging i think this will be enough. Additionally i will try to solder the Qi receiver inside the Miix so the USB port will be free for mobile charging.

—Edit—

There are different sources for 3.3V around. Maybe there are USB 3G sticks available which are working with this voltage. This would be the last hurdle to take for a full mobile internet experience with a non 3G version of our Miix

  1. Hi
How is wireless charging going. Did you realize this. I wonder about it becouse im Looking for some tablets for our handicaped children at school. Easy way charging is necesary for usage at special school. Thank you for information.

    1. Hello Tomas,

the project is in hold because lack of time. The charging should be possible. The problem with the lenovos is that the backcover is from aluminium. so it will not be possible to charge through metal material with the coils. the next problem i think about is the power consumtion. all the wireless QI charger are for mobile devices like phones and maybe android tablets. they only provide a limited current from around max. 600mA. So the Lenovo Win8 devices with the Intel CPU´s need from time to time more current to hold the battery level while in work. there are some vendors who asked for a wireless charging standard for tablets too. One of them is Lenovo. Maybe whe see in near future these options on devices too.

So far i did not test the wireless charging on the Miix. if i get time I try to test it with a thin coil on the back of the cover but for this i first have to get a charger and a client coil for the Miix.

I am sorry at the moment the lack of time is killing all the plans for the future projects. but there will be better times again. hope you understand that.

  2. Thank you for quick answer. I dont undestand electronic too much, what is the problém with 600mA. I thought that I just leave tablet on Qi longer and that tablet will be fully recharged. If is there some problem Il be wait. For now we have just a few tablets diferent type. And pluging small micro USB cable for recharging is sometimes difficult. So i am looking for some (Windows) tablet with easy recharging and some kind easy sychronization (one “master” others “slave”). Thnak you Tomas

  3. Yes your are right. if the tablet is powered off maybe it will work with longer charging times. The orginial charger for the Miix and Tablet8 provides 2100mA. So this is 3,5 times higher than the QI can provide at the moment. I am not sure what the charging controller does with that inside the tablet. So while in working condition the device will discharge with nearly the same time like the charger will not be there.

Overnight charging should be possible with QI but the next problem the device has to be in the correct position. so if the device sits not in correct place it will not charge anyway.

thats only my thoughts about this.

  4. If you dont need a windows tablet a solution for you would be Sony with their xperia tablet series. I own the Sony xperia z ultra so far an sony has an unique charging port with magnets.

i think this is easy to attach and disconnect. I would like to have such a port an my lenovo thinkpad8.

check out the sony series if an android device would be useful for your project.

  5. 🙂 I have Sony tablet at home with the station. That is perfect.
But if you check the web – it hard to find that is possible charging this way. Sony is for our school and children a little expensiv. The second thing is aplication – there is one software – grid 2
    http://sensorysoftware.com/grid-software-for-aac/
which our kids use it. They make grid player but its an app for iPad. The main soft is working on Windows. So we teach kids on computers, some use this special app and everybody wants to use tablet 🙂 I hope that with Windows 10 we just teach kids on any devices but with the same Windows. So this is why i am looking for some Windows tablet. Even that lenovo is 1/2 price to Sony and iPad. Thank you very much for your time and ideas. To mas

  6. Hi Tomas,

i think i have a solution for you to test.

Get one of these Lenovos or Tablets you want to use. Then get a silicone cover for this tablet.
For wireless charging there are adapters available on ebay or Amazon like this one here http://www.amazon.de/M3-X01-f%C3%BCr-Universal-QI-Charging-Receiver-Micro-USB-Eingang-Android-Phones/dp/B00HWRLLIE

you can put this receiver with double-sided tape on the back of the tablet. then put the usb inside the port and mantle it with the silicone or rubber cover. with that it should be possible to charge the tablet while not in use.

be sure to get a Qi receiver with as much current output you can find. there are some out there with around 700mA output in best conditions.
